Councillor
Fined and Suspected Poacher Remanded
A
suspected poacher has been remanded until August 5 by a Voi
court after he denied poaching and related charges.
The same court fined a Malindi councillor who had tried to
prevent the suspected poacher’s arrest KSh. 5000 or
two months imprisonment if he fails to pay the fine.
The suspect, who was arrested at Chakaola in Malindi on Saturday,
was charged in a Voi court with illegally having four elephant
tusks, a leopard skin, and dik dik meat.
Kenya Wildlife Service intelligence had received information
from the public that an elephant had been killed at Kisiki
cha Mzungu and the ivory tusks had been taken away.
KWS rangers with the help of game scouts tracked down the
suspect in Malind but the councillor incited the public to
prevent the rangers from arresting the suspect and the exhibits.
The arrests bring to 13 suspects arrested over the weekend
in a renewed crackdown on poaching and game meat trade.
More of the suspects are expected to be arraigned in court
any time from now in the KWS renewed crackdown on poachers
and game meat dealers.
