Ghana
MP’s jet-in for Conservation
A
delegation of Members of Parliament from Ghana was in the
country to confer with Kenya in shaping of wildlife policy
in their country.
Congratulating
the Kenya government’s effort towards conservation of
Wildlife and Biodiversity, the chairman of the Ghana delegation
Hon. Ofosu Asamoah, accentuated the need to work closely with
communities, “because they are the key custodian in
conservation”. These Members were conducting a familiarization
excursion to three countries including South Africa and Malawi
for similar incentives.
The
delegation visited the Nairobi Safari Walk and the Animal
Orphanage before proceeding to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust
where they had a magnificent interaction with young orphaned
elephants. They also had worthy discussions with Shompole
Group Ranch community members.
Shompole
is one of the existing examples that exhibit how a local community
can directly benefit from conservation. The community has
build Shomple-lodge and contrived a 35,000-acre conservancy
surrounded by 140,000 acres of dispersal area for wildlife.
The
Ghana delegation was made up of Hon. Ofuso Asamoah (chairman),
Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Hon. Collins Dauda, Hon Francis
Osei-Sarfo, Mr. Camillo Pwamang (Clerk) and Miss Victoria
Wiafe (of FRR Ghana Office). Steering this tour was Director
of Pan African Willife Conservation Network, Patricia Awori.
With this team also was Kenya Wildlife Service Senior officials
headed by Mr. Phillip Mwakio.
