Restocking of Amboseli

Due to a devastating drought last year, over 50% of Amboseli’s wildebeest and zebra population was lost. A census conducted inside the park at the beginning of the year counted 982 zebra and 143 wildebeest, down from 10,000 zebra and 7,000 wildebeest in the 2007 census.

At a cost of Kshs. 130 million, KWS plans, to translocate 4,000 zebra and 3,000 wildebeest from Athi-Kapiti, Machakos and Soysambu ranches in order to restore the population of wild herbivores in Amboseli. The planned translocation will take place in phases depending on availability of funds.
