KWS to hold sixth Conservation Heroes Day in Nairobi
Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) will on December 16, 2011 hold its sixth annual Conservation Heroes’ Day at its headquarters in Nairobi. KWS holds the event every year in honour of its employees who have lost their lives in the course of active duty. The Chief Guest at this year’s event will be Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court of Kenya, Dr. Willy Mutunga.
The event will also see the unveiling of a ranger statue at the headquarters to remember, honour and celebrate the serving heroes in their commitment to the management and protection of Kenya’s precious wildlife. The annual event provides a special occasion to reflect on the lives of those who displayed courage and self-sacrifice in the face of danger and adversity and to celebrate the continued commitment by their remaining colleagues. Most of these heroes died in combat with armed bandits, preventing wildlife crimes, on rescue missions and protecting people’s lives and property from damage by wild animals.
The families of the departed heroes, friends, employees of KWS and other government agencies, conservationists and well-wishers, will converge at a special monument erected in honour of the departed heroes at KWS headquarters along Lang’ata Road in Nairobi from 2.00pm.
