Kitui man in the dock on illegal ivory charge

A 56-year-old Kitui man has been charged at a Mutomo court on counts of illegal possession of a government trophy, dealing and failing to make a report to authorities following his arrest at Mutha Township on Friday (December 7, 2012).
Harrison Makongo was arraigned before a Mutomo Law Court in Kitui County on Monday (December 10, 2012). He denied the charges and was to be released on a bond of Sh300, 000 cash bail and a surety of Sh0.5 million. However, he will remain in police custody after failing to raise the bond amount.
The businessman was arrested by KWS officials on Friday (December 7, 2012) after he was found hiding eleven pieces of ivory in a freshly dug hole at his home.
Elsewhere, a suspected trophy dealer was arrested in Nairobi County by KWS officials and 10kg ivory recovered on Wednesday (December 5, 2012). The suspect has since been charged at a Nairobi court on illegal possession and dealing with trophy counts.
