Rangers net ivory and rifles, arrest 27 for poaching

Assorted weapons, ammunition, ivory and elephant tusks recovered by KWS rangers from poachers in a past anti-poaching operation.

KWS rangers have recovered 13 pieces of ivory, two rifles, 49 rounds of ammunition and arrested 27 suspected poachers in the past one week of anti-poaching operations across the country. 

A total of five pieces of ivory were recovered and four suspects arrested in Mombasa and Garissa Counties on Monday (August 6, 2012). KWS rangers also arrested three suspects, recovered 20 kgs of Eland meat and impounded two bicycles in Lemong area in Taita Taveta County.

Two pieces of ivory, an AK47 rifle with 45 rounds ammunitions were recovered and two suspects arrested at Mackinon shopping centre in Taita Taveta County on Wednesday (August 8, 2012). Three suspects were arrested and a Toyota car they were using to ferry six pieces of ivory impounded at Eorekule in Narok County.

In Laikipia County, a poacher was killed in a gun fight with KWS rangers and an AK 47 rifle with four rounds of ammunitions recovered in Laikipia Nature Conservancy on Thursday (August 9, 2012).
