Five suspected poachers gunned down, two KWS rangers injured in shoot-out

Five suspected poachers were on Friday April  20, 2012  night gunned down and one escaped during a fierce exchange of fire with Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) rangers at Chepareria in West Pokot County.

Two rangers were injured in the 1am incident that took more than 40 minutes. The injured ranger has been airlifted to Nairobi  for further treatment while the other was treated in Kitale and discharged. Elephant tusks weighing 50kg were recovered as well as three AK47 rifles and 15 rounds of ammunition. Police have already arrived at the scene of crime while a hot pursuit for the escapee is underway.

KWS is committed more than ever before to end all poaching and illegal possession of  wildlife products.
