Seven bodies recovered after drowning in flash floods

A section of the gorges at Hells Gate National Park.

All the seven bodies of members of a church youth group who were swept away last evening by flash floods in Naivasha have been sighted and are being retrieved.  They were walking in the gorge in Hells Gate National Park as part of a 53-member youth group from Mukarara PCEA Church in Waithaka. One body was retrieved last evening while search efforts to account for the rest went on throughout the night.  The seven people had gone missing just before dusk when the group encountered sudden flash floods.  The rains resulting in the unexpected flash floods had fallen in neighbouring areas of Longonot, Kedong and Suswa and not in Hells Gate itself.  Two members, the driver and their tour leader, opted to stay at the parking lot as the rest of the members went into the gorge.  Guides accompanying the youth group managed to rescue 44 members to safety.
