Poacher shot dead in Tsavo.

Mr. Victor Mawalla, a Tanzanian national removes ivory from his customized vehicle with a false bottom at the KWS Headquarters in Nairobi.

One poacher was today 18th January 2013 morning at approximately 730Hrs shot dead at Umbi in northern Tsavo East. Rangers who were on an early morning patrol came across three suspected poachers. When challenged to stop, they opened fire on the rangers. In the ensuing shootout, one of them was shot dead. A G3 rifle with 11 rounds of ammunition was recovered. Also recovered arrows and an axe. A follow up is on for the gang members.

In another incident  on 17th January 2013 a small carton was intercepted at JKIA Posta. On verification it was found to contain pieces of worked ivory comprising of 11 bangles and 2 face masks. The parcel weighing 1.69kg was destined for Bangkok. It had originated from Bujumbura.
