A woman of Chinese nationality arrested smuggling ivory at Jomo Kenyatta airport

NAIROBI, KENYA (February 18, 2013) A Chinese woman is appearing at a Makadara Law Court this Thursday afternoon (February 21, 2013) following her arrest at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) while on transit aboard a flight KQ 741 from Maputo, Mozambique to Guangzhou, China, late Wednesday (February 20, 2013) .
Yan Jiping, 39, was however detected and seized by a joint security team comprising of the Kenya Airports Police Unit, Customs officials, Kenya Airways officials and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officials. She was found smuggling, through Kenyan territory, worked ivory comprising of a necklace, a bangle and two pieces of rings.
Meanwhile, two Tanzanian nationals arrested on Sunday (February 17, 2013) with 16 pieces of ivory weighing 141kg at Ongata Rongai Township on the outskirts of Nairobi County have been released on a bond of Sh0.5 million each by a Kibera court. Musa Felicia and Victor Mawalla pleaded not guilty when they appeared to answer charges of jointly being in possession, dealing with a government trophy and failing to make a report of being in its possession to authorities. The case was set for hearing on May 3, 2013.
