Kenyan court sentences British snake smuggler and local accomplice to five years imprisonment
Date Published: 25 Sep, 2013
A British snake smuggler and his Kenyan accomplice were yesterday (Monday, September 23, 2013) sentenced to five years imprisonment without the option of a fine after they pleaded guilty to wildlife-related crimes.
Mr Simon David Harris, 43, British citizen, and Mr Richard Wangwe Adera, 28, Kenyan from Kasarani in Nairobi, were both jailed by a Naivasha court and advised to appeal, if they wished.
They were planning to export the snakes to Germany and South Africa.
The convicts had been arrested over possession of six live Kenya horn viper snakes at Fishers Camp in Kongoni Division of Naivasha District within Nakuru County on Sunday by Kenya Wildlife Service rangers in liaison with the Tourism Police Unit officers.
Mr Harris lives in Germany but works in South Africa where he manages a zoo in Kwa Zulu Natal.
