Ivory seized at port
Date Published: 03 Jul, 2013
A container with unknown weight of ivory was last evening intercepted in Mombasa and is being held at the port police.
A joint team of Kenya Wildlife Service, Kenya Revenue Authority and Kenya Ports Authority intercepted the ivory destined for Port Klanga West Port Ehsan in Malaysia
The ivory, which was stashed in 69 bundles of several pieces, had been disguised as sun dried fish maws, which has a pungent smell intended to throw off sniffer dogs. Some bags had worked polished pieces of ivory while others had raw ivory.
Export documents show that consignment had entered Kenya from Uganda on June 12, 2013.
It had exported by Bajje investments Uganda Ltd with Giesenya Freight Logistics Ltd of Nairobi as the clearing agent.
The container arrived in Mombasa about two weeks ago and had been parked at a petrol station in Jomvu in Mombasa until its entry into the port.
Details of weight and further investigations to follow.
