Suspected Chinese ivory smuggler in court today
Date Published: 21 Feb, 2014
A 32-year-old Chinese suspect who denied charges related to ivory smuggling will appear in a Makadara Court today morning for the hearing of the case.
Mr Ou Kaiming was charged with illegal dealing and possession of ivory yesterday.
He had spent the Valentine weekend in police custody after he was arrested on Friday February 14, 2014 while on transit through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport aboard KQ flight 741 with 0.68 kg of ivory from Maputo in Mozambique to Guangzhou in China. He has been held in remand since then.
He was intercepted while trying to board KQ 882 with two ivory bangles, two necklaces, two bracelets, one worked ivory and one piece of rectangular ivory block all weighing 0.68kg. The exhibits were taken to National Museums of Kenya for verification. A Chinese-speaking translator has also been found.
He is the third Chinese in as many weeks to face the brunt of the dreaded Wildlife Conservation and Management Law 2013, which came into force on January 10, 2014.
