Despite its importance, the forest has faced increased threats from settlements and encroachments. Approximately 25 per cent of the Mau forest has been lost to these threats, with devastating effects on environmental stability, economic development and human-well-being. Following the recommendations of the Task Force on the Conservation of the Mau Forests Complex and the establishment of the Interim Coordinating Secretariat (ICS), a plan for the restoration and rehabilitation of the Mau Forests Complex has been prepared and is currently being implemented.
The Interim Coordinating Secretariat has already been receiving land title deeds from members of the public who are concerned by the critical situation in the Mau Forests Complex. Several others have expressed interest to surrender theirs. Such patriotic gesture in support of the public interest is much appreciated by the Government.
The Interim Coordinating Secretariat hereby appeals to those who have yet to surrender their title deeds to do so and join the growing number of Kenyans who want to be part of the solution.
